Oats & Chia Congee with Steamed Apples & Cinnamon

When your partner is freshly postpartum, food is not optional.

She will be: Healing, bleeding, sleep deprived, possibly breastfeeding around the clock. So, she needs warm, easy-to-digest, ready-to-eat nourishment STAT 💥

Not toast.
Not cereal.
Not “What do you feel like eating?”

This is the meal you make.

It freezes beautifully, reheats in minutes, and supports real recovery.

 

đź›’ Shopping List (One Store Trip)

Bring this list:

  • 180g rolled oats (havermout)
  • 235g steel-cut oats (havergrutten)
  • 40g chia seeds
  • 1 small knob fresh ginger 
  • Sea salt
  • Maple syrup
  • 4–5 apples
  • Cinnamon

That’s it. Nothing fancy. Everything affordable.

 

🍚 Part 1: The Congee Base

This is a soft, slow-cooked oat porridge inspired by traditional congee: gentle on digestion and deeply nourishing.

Ingredients

  • 180g rolled oats
  • 235g steel-cut oats
  • 2.5 cm knob fresh ginger, peeled and halved
  • Pinch of sea salt
  • 1.8–2 liters water

Instructions

  1. Bring water to a boil.
  2. Add Oats, Ginger, pinch of salt, a bit of cinnamon 
  3. Reduce to a gentle simmer.
  4. Cook 35–45 minutes.
  5. Stir often so it doesn’t stick.
  6. You can add some maple syrup already, or keep it plain.
  7. Remove the ginger pieces before freezing.

It should be creamy and slightly loose. It will thicken as it cools. You can add more water before freezing and/or when reheating. Depends on which texture she prefers. 

 

🍎 Part 2: Steamed Apples with Cinnamon

This adds warmth, natural sweetness, and comfort.

Ingredients

  • 4–5 apples, peeled and chopped
  • 1–2 tsp cinnamon
  • Splash of water 
  • Optional: drizzle maple syrup

Instructions

  1. Add apples and a splash of water to a small pot.
  2. Cover and cook on low for 10–15 minutes.
  3. Stir occasionally.
  4. Cook until soft but not mushy.
  5. Stir in cinnamon (and maple syrup if using). 

 

đź§Š How to Freeze It Properly

  1. Let everything cool completely.
  2. Portion the congee (topped with apples) into containers.
  3. Label with the date. (can be stored in the freezer for up to 3-4 months)

 

🔥 How to Reheat

From frozen:

  1. Microwave 2–3 minutes, stirring halfway.
  2. Add a splash of water or milk if too thick.
  3. Top with apples.
  4. Drizzle maple syrup.
