Why 6 months postpartum can hit so hard.

Why 6 months postpartum can hit so hard.

Apparently, 6 months postpartum can come with its own plot twist. Here’s what I learned:

We talk so much about the first 6 weeks, but around 4-6 months postpartum, many mums experience another emotional dip.

And no, it doesn’t mean you’re going backwards.

Your hormones are shifting AGAIN

Estrogen is still low, which can affect mood, sleep, serotonin, and emotional balance.

Progesterone, which usually has a calming effect on the brain, can also stay low until ovulation returns.

This can make you feel more anxious, sensitive, emotional, or like your sleep is lighter than usual.

Dopamine can dip too

If you’re breastfeeding, prolactin stays higher to support milk production.

But higher prolactin can also suppress dopamine, the hormone linked to motivation, focus, and that “I can do this” feeling.

So if you feel foggy, flat, unmotivated, or just “meh”… it makes sense.

Your nervous system is tired

You’ve been running on broken sleep, stress, and adrenaline for months.

By 4–6 months, your body may finally be trying to settle and recalibrate.

This can show up as irritability, overwhelm, exhaustion, sensory overload, or feeling like you have no capacity left.

Nutrient depletion can peak

Postpartum recovery can drain key nutrients like iron, ferritin, B12, and magnesium.

Ferritin is the protein that stores iron in your body.

When these are low, they can contribute to anxiety, fatigue, low mood, and overwhelm.

What you need to know

This is not “all in your head.” This is biology. This is common. This is explainable. You are not failing. You are not going backwards. You deserve support through all of it. And you are not alone. 🤍
